Delay ranges for different Level of service (LOS) categories of uncontrolled median openings on multilane divided urban roads are not defined for heterogeneous traffic condition prevailing in India. To define the LOS criteria of uncontrolled median openings service delay to minor priority movement, i.e. delay to U turns is considered as a measure of effectiveness. The service delay data were collected for five different category of vehicles at different test sections during peak as well as off peak periods on various weekdays to have wide variation in traffic volume. A linear regression model is proposed between hourly approaching traffic volume and average service delay to all categories of vehicles. Five validation measures are used on service delay data to find the optimal number of clusters which is required for the classification of different LOS categories. The optimal number is 6 and therefore in this study the LOS is classified into six different categories. K-means clustering technique is used to propose the delay ranges for 6 different LOS categories. The range is less than 5 s for best operating condition and is greater than 33 s for the LOS "F". |
