Use of modified bitumen in hot mix asphalt has increased tremendously in the last two decades. The traditional equiviscous method used for determining the mixing and compacting temperatures for modified asphalt is based on simple viscosity measurements of aspnalt, which usually results in excessive high temperatures in case of modified binders. In this study, two new methods namely Steady Shear Flow (SSF) method and Phase angle method have been used to determine and compare the mixing and compacting temperatures by using Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) for neat bitumen and bitumen modified with 3%, 5% and 7% SBS and EVA. From the tests it was concluded that both Steady Shear Flow method and Phase Angle method provide lower mixing and compacting temperatures for modified bitumen compared to equi viscous method. |
