摘要：	Maintenance of roads in hills is a complex problem and requires an effective management of men, materials and machinery to make the system efficient and cost effective. The maintenance of hill roads, particularly in western Himalayan region, poses some special problems.This is due to the terrain being geologically youngand thus consisting of unconsolidated rock system with lot of faults and folds. Landslides including rock slides are therefore of frequent occurrence during wet season.The performance of a hill road is mainly related to efficient drainage of water and control of landslides.Much of maintenance cost and efforts are spent on clearing of landslidedebris for keeping the roads open to traffic.Heavy snow clearance in higher reaches adds to the maintenance cost tremendously.It is therefore essential to look in the factors responsible for frequent extensive damages and remedies thereof.Adequate maintenance of roads reduces the vehicle operating cost and increases the safety of road users.The availability of very limited maintenance funds has necessitated that the usage of the same is stretched to the maximum possible extent by evolving some system approach for hill road maintenance and to address safety concerns.. The subject matter presented in this paper is based more or less upon the practices followed and author's experience of more than 35 years in Himachal Pradesh PWD. This paper accordingly presents various aspects of Maintenance of Hill Roads.
