Post tensioning and subsequent cement grouting of the tendons in sheathing ducts are very common and important technical activities in Civil Engineering practice. In bridgesvery commonly post tensioning of cables is executed in concrete girders / structures. It has been observed that during stressing of cables (strands) requisite elongations are, sometimes, not achieved with respect to the requisite applied load. It results 'under stressing' or 'sover stressing'. Both are harmful, if applied toad and achieved elongations are not maintained within permissible limits. Against the nonachieving of requisite elongation of cables with respect to the requisite load, numbers of reasons can be demonstrated. But our goal should be, under the reasonable condition of site and reasonable maintenance of technical specifications of both materials and equipments, 'balanced condition' should be achieved between elongation of the cables and load applied there on. In view of the same, brief methodology of stressing operationfor post-tensioning the tendons / cables in bridge girders is described hereinafter in this paper with relevant justifications. Besides the said post tensioning of cables, it is also very important to grout the tendons in sheathing ducts of the cables properly well in timeafter stressing of the cables to avoid corrosion ofstrands and to ensure longevity / durability of the bridge. In view of the same brief methodology for such grouting operation is also described Young Engineers at site may be benefited during execution of bridges, if they find the methodologies of both post-tensioning and cement-grouting are stated in this paper methodically and most suitable for implementation at site. This paper is an attempt for the same, especially for the young engineers, executing pre-stressed bridges at site. |
