Kochi, the most vibrant city in the southern part of Kerala is already experiencing signs of urban growth pressures. Anticipating the future demand, Government has planned to introduce a light Metro system in the city as an important measure to change travel structure and to reduce congestion of ground transportation. This work aims to study the commuter mode choice analysis that examines behavioural responses of commuters to the proposed Metro rail System in Kochi, with estimation of the probable shift of their work trips from existing modes in Kochi to the metro mode. As this is the first metro rail project in Kerala, the attitude of people towards this new travel mode is ambiguous. The responses and opinions from the commuters are collected using stated preference approach. The study also uses Revealed preference data to analyse the existing travel scenario. Binary logit modelling is done with the aid of the statistical software Nlogit. From this study, a set of influencing factors, with reliable and predictable data base, to explain the variation in modal shift behaviour has been identified. Also the overall and mode wise probable shift from the existing mode to metro mode has been estimated. Elasticity analyses with changing travel time and travel cost of metro was done. |
