Under previous research the University of Maine's AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center along with Maine Department of Transportation have developed and successfully demonstrated the "Bridge in a Backpack" technology on Neal Bridge in Pittsfield, Maine. This technology uses an FRP arch shell filled with concrete along with FRP decking to create a durable arch bridge. This next study will advance the technology to allow for more a economical bridge, longer spans and construction of the FRP arch onsite. This work will be used to build five more demonstration bridges in Maine.
