The results from a series of laboratory tests on specimens of fine grained soils subjected to repeated loading simulative of traffic effects on pavements are presented. The soils had a plasticity index range from 19 to 48% and tests both in saturated and partially saturated conditions were performed. Models for the resilient strain responses of the soils are proposed together with a limiting stress relationship for the development of permanent strain. Further testing using the california bearing ratio (CBR) apparatus allowed the relationship between CBR and soil stiffness to be investigated and compared with the empirical relationships currently used for pavement design. The non-linear resilient strain models were incorporated into a finite element program, and a range of pavement structures were analysed. These analyses indicate that the subgrade stiffness increases rapidly with depth and that the position of the water table has a considerable influence on the insitu stiffness. (A) |
