摘要：	New road vehicles must pass noise tests as part of the process of type-approval at the time of production which helps in limiting the overall impact of traffic noise. However, since there are very few accurate post-production checks on the noise produced by vehicles, individual cars that make excessive noise can still cause widespread annoyance. This work assesses the viability of the ISO 5130 stationary exhaust noise test procedure for roadside enforcement through a roadside measurement program and review of current procedures and equipment. It provides recommendations for measurement procedures to be adopted which may provide supplementary evidence in prosecuting vehicle owners for breach of Regulation 54-2 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended) relating to the modification of vehicle exhaust systems. A potential long-term approach involving the combined application of an MOT-based test and roadside enforcement is also discussed.
