The high speed friction properties of a road surface are a key property affecting the safety of motorists. Owing to the complexities involved in measuring high speed friction directly, the high speed friction performance of the UK road network is managed through the specification of pavement texture depth. This approach however has its limitations and recently it has become necessary to require the high speed friction performance of some surfacings to be measured directly. The work documented here seeks to determine an acceptable high speed friction criterion for asphalt materials to act as a comparison for direct measurements. |
