In a society, citizens have many preconceived opinions in-place, strongly propagated in response to the existing and experienced circumstances. With respect to walkable mobility as well, ground reality on Indian urban streets is perceived by everyone with different degrees of opinions, mostly as precarious by the vulnerable road users. A need to substantiate this with facts and an attempt to further work on solutions towards achieving an efficient on-foot mobility is imperative. In a complex urban transport system, to plan and design pedestrian friendly streets, it is necessary to understand morphology of urban spaces. Not just as a judgemental or superficial opinion of the situation, but rather a precise & measurable overview of the phenomena in order to arrive at effective solutions. Hence, aim is to achieve a method to empirically assess the urban space morphology, comprising of the linear elements of mobility, viz. streets; crossing paths at street junctions; and interface between streets and amenities. Thus, aiding a conducive pedestrian friendly environment for elderly user group, which in turn becomes so for all users. |
