A cast iron beam, instrumented with deflection gauges, strain gauges and two forms of acoustic monitoring system, was subjected to a series of nine load cycles of generally increasing maximum load. The aim of the test programme was to determine whether acoustic emission (AE) techniques could be used to form the basis of an intelligent monitoring system for structures. The results of the test are described in terms of a simple model and they support the view that AE was generated by a load-related mechanism, which was likely to be due to micro-fracturing of the cast iron. Thus AE techniques could form the basis of an intelligent monitoring system, but further work is required to develop a practical system. Recommendations for furthering the project are provided. (A) |
