The behavior of steel column baseplate connections in moment frames subjected to lateral loads has been the subject of numerous experimental investigations, giving rise to a variety of methods for determining strength and stiffness characteristics appropriate for design. However, there has been limited work to develop, and particularly to verify, general methods for predicting connection-level moment-rotation response. Although predictive methods have been implemented within the context of single test programs, a broadly verified, generalized modeling approach is lacking. This paper presents a rapid parametric numerical modeling approach for analysis of exposed, moment frame baseplate connections of many configurations subject to combined axial and moment loads. The accuracy of the models is verified using experimental results from five distinct test programs. An example parametric analysis is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the procedure and illustrate how subtle design changes may impact the moment-rotation behavior, evolution of stress and strain in various components, and failure modes. |
