The state-of-the-art for evaluating transportation systems is through simulation based experiments which provides the opportunity to evaluate design strategies without committing expensive, time-consuming resources to implement alternative strategies in the field. Given that the development of a full scale environment for simulation based studies is a large scale effort, the emphasis of our prior project has been on modeling and tool integration to support integrated simulations, e.g. freight transportation in metropolitan areas. As domain scientists employ simulations for increasingly sophisticated studies, management of experimental tasks and avalanche of data becomes a barrier to high-quality research. Building on our prior integration framework, we propose to organize experiments around scientific workflows to automate computation and analysis processes. The specific objectives of the project are: (1) Model simulation based transportation experiment processes as scientific workflows which provide domain scientists with a simple, high-level model for thinking about their analysis pipelines. (2) Create a workflow synthesis and management environment which supports structured experiments and enables automatic data and application integration, execution and reuse of high-level experiment designs, recording and querying data provenance information, etc. (3) Interact with METRANS researchers so that the developed software environment becomes a core simulation testbed for their research in freight transportation. |
