Construction of an artifuial archipelago in the Dutch lake Markermeer has benefited wildlife, particularly birds. Created mostly out of locally available clay and fine sediment, the five low-lying islands surrounded by a zone of shallow water provide an avian sanctuary in a body of water that has declined ecologically in recent decades. Carefully designed to resist wave action, the multimillion-dollar Marker Wadden project includes a harbor,, footpaths, and viewing facilities to accommodate visitors. |
