The purpose of this research was to develop a model for estimating roundabout delay as a function of the Weaving capacity, Approach volume, Circulating volume and geometric factors. Three roundabouts with 4-legged intersection were selected in Hyderabad, Telangana at Prasad Imax Junction, Narayanguda Junction and Barkathpura Junction.
Total delay is defined as the sum of average stopped delay and circulating delay. Approach volume and entry delay were measured during peak and off-peak periods using video cameras. Weaving capacity and Circulating volume are extracted from the recorded video data. Data on geometric design elements including circulating width, entry width, weaving length, and roundabout diameter were measured through field survey during the off-peak period. An empirical approach been used for developing delay models as a function of the influencing factors based on a time interval of 15 min. Correlation was done by taking total delay as dependent variable and entry width, circulating width, weaving length, Island diameter, Weaving capacity, Approach volume and Circulating volume as independent variables, where the strength of model fit was assessed by coefficient of correlation(R) value that shows the level of dependence and goodness of fit of the model was assessed by R2 value and statistic measures like t-statistic and F-ratio.
The analysis indicated that Traffic and geometric variables that have considered have significant effects on the total delay of the roundabout. The Approach volume and weaving capacity have the greatest influence, whereas the circulating volume has the least influence. For total delay, entry width has the greatest influence, where the circulating width has the least effect. |
