Road accidents are now globally recognised as a serious public health problem. The statistics published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that 1.25 million people worldwide are estimated to be killed and almost 50 million are believed to be injured in road crashes each year. Road accidents have earned India a dubious distinction, as the country has over taken China and now has the worst road traffic accident rate worldwide. This has been highlighted by the WHO in its Global Status Report on Road Safety. The report pointed to speeding, drunk driving and low use of helmets, seat belts and child restraints in vehicles as the main contributing factors. This has resulted into 4.73 lakh road accidents in the country in 2016, in which 1.51 lakh people were killed, while 4.85 lakh others were injured.
The Road Accident Statistics for the year 2016 for India shows that 377people die per day on an average (including 20 children under the age of 14), which is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day. The cause-wise analysis further reveals that 84% accidents take place only due to drivers'fault. This can be mainly because the driver instructors who trained these drivers earlier were not skilled enough to impress upon these drivers the safety precautions to be taken to avert the accidents in any kind of driving situation.
It is, therefore, suggested that this responsibility should be given to all the IDTR (Institute of Driving Training & Research) Institutes in India running under the financial support from MoRTH or State Governments, to start skill development programmes for driver instructors, then only we will have next generation of well-behaved reliable and accident free drivers in future. The ten golden rules specified by the Transport Research Wing (TRW), MoRTH should become a part of the driving test of each and every driver before he gets his first (Learner's) driving Iicence anywhere in India. |
