The transportation profession is in the midst of game-changing movement in the planning and design of safe and efficient roadways. Local and state agencies are shifting towards performance-based, data-driven decision making and solutions that require a transparent assessment of tradeoffs between performance measures-namely safety, operations, environmental impacts and life-cycle cost. Flexibility is not only needed; it is a necessity for designing roadways for all modes-an understanding of applying the appropriate design based on the context. Optimizing lane widths within a given right-of-way provides practitioners with an opportunity to better serve users-trucks, transit, automobiles, bicycles, and pedestrians. |
