Whereas concrete pavements have well-known advantages (long life, resistance to permanent deformations, etc.) over flexible pavements, the main disadvantages often mentioned are a certain lack of comfort as a result of neglected surface evenness, and a high level of rolling noise. Developments in construction techniques, in particular their gradual adaptation to slip-form paving machines, permanently raise the problem of achieving the best possible evenness. That is why the PIARC Technical Committee on Concrete Roads has decided to gather information available from studies and observations made in various countries on the factors that are relevant to obtaining good evenness in constructing concrete-paved roads, as well as on the causes that may affect the maintenance of evenness on such roads during their service life and the means to remedy them. |
