The principles behind using the thermal conductivity sensor for an indirect measurement of matric suction are described. The factors controlling the thermal conductivity of the sensor are discussed. The requirements of the sensor for the measurement of matric suction in soils are examined from a theoretical standpoint by using the capillary model and a heat flow model. The current methods for the calibration of the sensors and the evaluation of the sensors' outputs are described. Alternative methods for the calibration of the sensors and the evaluation of the sensors' outputs are suggested in an attempt to determine a better way to evaluate the data. The data acquisition and the related electronics necessary for field monitoring of the matric suction sensors are discussed. |
