摘要：	Traffic safety is a major concern in most of the inter urban roads in India as most of the highways are studded with severe ribbon developments directly contributing to severe encroachments due to other activities. This in turn is one of the causative factors for the increase in road crashes resulting due to different reasons like higher speed. conflicts, etc. When such roads pass through the city, it endangers safety for the habitants residing along the corridor. To obviate this situation, bypasses are constructed to divert the through traffic plying on inter urban road away from the habitation residing within the towns to the periphery. In literature, there are varied opinion presented on the effect of bypass construction on cities, and that there are various effects depending upon many other factors such as the bypass location. its distance from the town centre, the level of socio-economic development, approved land use plans, planning policy, town size and traffic volumes. This study is another step towards better understanding the effects of bypass construction on small cities. This study analyses the safety and crash, impacts of the construction of a bypass road using a case study in Khatauli, Muzaffamagar District, Uttar Pradesh, India. This town, being at strategic location, is ideal for such research as impacts and changes are readily ascertained. Highway NH-58 passing through Khatauli town became congested due to through traffic encountering delays caused due to traffic congestion and increased road crashes. Recently, a bypass has been constructed at NH-58 to divert the traffic through Khatauli. Various surveys and interviews of residents and shopkeepers were conducted along prefect highway to examine the reaction of habitants along highway after bypass construction. The crash data has been collected from police station and concessionaires to assess the impact on road safety. Road crash analysis has been done to evaluate the severity of traffic crashes, causes and type of road crashes, rate of road crashes, relation to road traffic etc. after the construction of bypass road. This paper analyses the safety impacts on traffic and habitants along Highway after the construction of bypass road using a case study in Khatauli, Muzaffamagar District, Uttar Pradesh, India.
