Walking, being a primary need of almost every one in India, has not been considered important while providing facilities to the walkers. With respect to assessment of walking facilities, methodology used is more suitable for ideal conditions instead of ground realities. As on ground, various types of obstructions are observed (garbage, parked vehicles, potholes, etc.) causing intricacy in walking. It may even result in condition where pedestrians start walking on carriageway even in presence of footpath. Therefore, it is important to evaluate a footpath based on types and amount of such obstructions. The existing methods for evaluating pedestrians' level of service are based on speed of walking, pedestrian flow and space per pedestrian and the qualitative parameters of footpath have not been considered. Bad quality of footpath even makes pedestrians to walk on carriageway along with motorised traffic resulting in higher risks. The present study evaluates the footpaths considering the types of obstructions lying on footpath area. This study provides an easy 'score rating" methodology for evaluating footpath surface quality and also proposes a methodology to evaluate walking facilities of the pedestrians walking on footpath as well as on carriageway. |
