Cities and neighbourhoods have been planned and designed with several objectives over the ages; street network and transportation patterns being a primary base. Since later part of the nineteenth century when transport planning picked up momentum with the advent of cars in cities, the urban areas witnessed aftermath of this in terms of congested streets, pollution, impact on public health and death of urban public spaces. This led to envisioning of Urban Design (UD) theories by eminent architects, designers, planners and theorists towards urban transport systems based on walkable, non-motorised and mass transit modes of transportation leading to sustainable communities and ecology at large, while boosting the public life of citizens. This paper discusses ten such theories by proponents such as Howard, Calthorpe and Appleyard that evolved in the last two centuries highlighting the primary concepts with the objective of understanding the salient principles guiding towards design of sustainable transport systems. The theories have been discussed under three broad typologies in this study - theories that have been practically applied in city designs, purely theoretical or analytical propositions and utopian theories. The implications of such theories to the contemporary societies needs to be understood. |
