摘要: According to the winter maintenance policy of the Finnish National Road Administration (Finnra), a bare pavement policy applies to the busiest main roads (at least 50% of the road width must be bare). Finland has approximately 6500 km (4,000 mi) of such roads. Environmental impacts caused by the use of road salt have forced Finnra to develop its salting technology to minimize salt use. Maintaining traffic safety and flows at a high level while reducing the use of salt has proved a challenging task, but new salting technology is helping to achieve the objective. Also, it is essential to know how much salt will be required for different situations. Some years ago Finnra developed a salting table to assist in choosing the proper application rate. How the recommendations of the table have been followed and whether the recommendations of the table were satisfactory were studied on the basis of past Road Weather Information System data. Of 61 study cases, none showed significant failure. The main conclusion of the study was that the recommendations in the table are correct. However, the field staff do not appear to rely on the table sufficiently. Instead, much higher application rates than recommended are often used. Still, the application rates are smaller now than they were 10 years ago. Recommendations for action are given.
