摘要: Three concrete mixtures were placed in a jointed plain concrete paving project in Newport News, Virginia, to reduce the shrinkage and improve the flexural strength of the concrete. Two mixtures contained ground-granulated blast furnace slag; one contained a 50-mm nominal maximum size (NMS) aggregate, and the other a 25-mm NMS aggregate. The third mixture contained Class F fly ash with a 25-mm NMS aggregate. Increases in maximum aggregate size are expected to provide concretes requiring less paste, less cementitious material, and less water, resulting in reduced shrinkage, and to provide a better interlock when cracks occur. Such improvements are expected to lead to better performance, with a long service life and reduced maintenance. The contractor, producer, Federal Highway Administration, and Virginia Department of Transportation worked closely to fabricate the test sections. Test results from the laboratory and field indicated that all three mixtures can provide satisfactory strength, low permeability, and dimensional stability. The test sections are in excellent condition after 2 years of service in the westbound lane and 6 months of service in the eastbound lane of I-64.
