The past few years have seen a growing demand for visualization technology in the geotechnical and environmental industry. This demand has been driven by the urgent need to communicate complex site conditions and other spatial data to regulators, facility owners, lawyers, and the many other stakeholders concerned with construction projects and environmental restoration. Until recently, three-dimensional (3-D) visualization meant expensive Unix workstations and even more expensive special purpose software. But the geotechnical industry has always had difficulty implementing such complex computer technology. The research effort over the past three years to develop SiteView has focused on the question of how to bring sophisticated spatial modeling and visualization capabilities, heretofore found only in complex workstation software, down to the Windows personal computers that are widely available to geotechnical practitioners. Particular attention has been paid to development of a graphical user interface that is simple to use yet allows completion of highly complex spatial tasks; to design of a paradigm and schema for quick data import from the typical places where the data reside (e.g., in spreadsheets, relational and xBase databases, 2-D and 3-D computer-assisted drafting (CAD) files, digital terrain files, etc.) into the visualization model; and to integration of the visualization system with the suite of other computer tools used on geotechnical projects, ranging from work processors and spreadsheets to groundwater models and geographic information systems. SiteView is now widely used by geotechnical practitioners. Projections about the direction of technology development in environmental visualization are drawn from current research and development efforts in universities and industry and from demands expressed by users. |
