Reinforcement corrosion can currently be regarded as the main source of problems in the durability of concrete structures, and results in major costs for repairs and maintenance. The scope and complexity of this problem have led to stricter requirements of the quality of concrete and cover thickness in regulations and environments where reinforcement is most liable to attack, i.e. where chlorides are present, this has in some cases led to the use of extreme cover thickness, and hence more expensive structures. Research by CBI into the 'Service life of concrete Structures' has for several years focused on clarifying a number of questions concerning reinforcement corrosion caused by chlorides. |
