This is a study of the applciation of computer tomography in the study of asphalt pavements. A standardized imaging is developed and presented for imaging asphalt cores using an x-ray CT scanner. The protocol is referred to as asphalt core tomography (ACT). It can be used to determine the asphalt mass fractions in mixed and coarse aggregate cores. It is found to generate reasonable estimtes of the true mass fractions inside the core and it can be used to complement destructive chemical extraction methods. ACT can also be used to study the 3 dimensional internal deformations which occur as a core is going through different loading cycles. By extending existing 2-dimensional motion detection methods, and by comparing properly registered CT images of a core before and after a loading test, ACT can compute the complete displacement field for the entire core. The greatest potential application of ACT in materials testing application is in forensic studies and in screening cores for unusual features before further destructive testing. |
