This is the report of Phase One of a 2-phase study. This phase evaluated the traffic/control worker protection needs of maintenance work zones, work zone traffic control measures, protective/warning systems, etc.; and maintenance equipment, materials and procedures. The study addressed time and space occupancy required to implement traffic control/worker protection and to effect roadway repairs. This study identifies and justifies innovative approaches to reduce or eliminate maintenance worker exposure. The safety concepts are of seven types: barriers; warning devices; rumble strips; delineation devices; lighting devices; and signs. The design effort resulted in abandoning or combining some concepts as well as design of a total of 24 devices. Details of the study and its findings are presesnted. |
