The smart structure concept called 'tagging' involves the addition of a small amount of tiny sensor particles directly to an engineering material during manufacture. Subsequent interrogation of the material with the proper instrumentation can provide a measure of long-term condition assessment and quality control. The application of the 'Tagging for Improved Inspection' concept was demonstrated for highway applications: measurement of water-to-cement ratio in Portland cements; and assessment of asphalt concrete build density. |
