In this study the feasibility of using AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) as a monitoring tool for detecting corrosion on cathodically protected reinforcing steel in concrete was examined. Both relatively small concrete blocks with a single reinforcing steel specimen, and large concrete slabs containing two mats of reinforcing steel were constructed for the purpose of evaluating the ACIS technique. Although the feasibility of the technique was demonstrated for the concrete blocks containing a single reinforcing steel specimen, difficulties in interpretation of the data were created by the large macro-cell couples that were present in the large-scale slab tests. The present method for corrosion measurement is described. On cathodicaly protected structures, the effectiveness of the system is generally related to one or more criteria that require the measurement of potentials with respect of a reference electrode. Based on the potential measurement of a potential decay measurement, the corrosion activity is inferred. |
