This publication reviews the literature pertaining to the primary physical and chemical characteristics of aggregates that have a significant effect on the bonding between the aggregate and the asphalt. Specific areas of focus include the role played by morphology, electrical properties, and mineral composition of the aggregate in its interaction with water and consequently in stripping. Chemical functionalities in both asphalt and aggregates that play a predominant role in bonding are covered, as well as the effect of surface modification of the aggreagate and use of anti-stripping agents. A research plan is proposed to investigate some of the aspects of aggreagate properties (physical and chemical) properties that control bonding. |
