This report describes a 2-year investigation of cathodic protection (CP) systems installed on interstate highway bridges in North America. The performance of 287 systems, approximately 90% of the highway agencies systems, was reviewed through analysis of questionnaire responses and select field investigations. Overall, a majority of the systems were working well but systems in marine or other continuously wetted environments did not perform as well. Passing a CP current has the beneficial effect of removing chlorides from around the steel bar. |
