摘要: The objective of this research effort was to increase the transit industry's knowledge of successful applications of advanced technologies with the expectation that this will lead to their widespread adoptions. This status report documents work performed under the FTA Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) Program, a program structured to undertake research and development of innovative applications of advanced navigation, information, and communication technologies that most benefit public transportation. The report is the latest in a series of state-of-the-art reports, the last of which was published in January 1994. It contains the results of an investigation of the extent of adoption of advanced technology in the provision of public transportation service in North America. The report focuses on some of the most innovative implementations, namely, four types of services/technologies: Fleet Management, Traveler Information, Electronic Fare Payment, and Transportation Demand Management. The report provides tables that list several FTA-sponsored field operational tests and research projects planned or in process. Appendix A of this report lists alphabetically contact organizations and persons in the U.S. and Canada by state and by city within the state. It also provides an alphabetical listing of paratransit contacts and suppliers. Appendix B provides an alphabetical listing of the APTS projects mentioned in this report.
