In this report, the author describes the dynamic assignment and traffic simulation models that were developed to support the functional operating core of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS). Two primary functions are addressed by the assignment-simulation models: 1) determining, in real-time, the network paths to which drivers should be directed in reaching their destination; and, 2) predicting the time-varying link flow patterns which result from path choices made by drivers in response to supplied route guidance. The methodologies described in this report represent state-of-the-art network assignment and traffic simulation. In addition, the author describes DYNASMART a simulation-assignment framework which meets all functional requirements for ATIS/ATMS applications. |
