This document identifies successful rural Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) projects and statewide applications. These applications are referred to as "tools" and include those in the process of being tested prior to full deployment. The tools are categorized according to the seven Rural ITS Development Tracks defined in an FHWA report titled "Rural ITS User Needs". These seven tracks include: emergency services, tourism and travel information, traffic management, rural transit and mobility, crash prevention and security, operation and maintenance, and surface transportation and weather. For each tool information designed to help planners evaluate the appropriateness of a given ITS application is provided. This information includes: needs addressed by the tool, a description of the tool, deployment examples lessons learned from each deployment, benefits, implementation issues institutional issues encountered, and references. |
