The ADVANCE (Advanced Driver and Vehicle Advisory Navigation Concept) is a cooperative effort to evaluate the performance of the first large scale Dynamic Route Guidance System (DRGS) in the United States. At least 3,000 private and commercial vehicles in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago will be equipped with in-vehicle navigation and route guidance systems. The ADVANCE evaluation will encompass many aspects of the project, including system performance, changes in travel behavior, user perceptions, and safety. This paper describes the planning progress to date, specific issues addressed by the Evaluation Subcommittee, and a detailed discussion of the plans for the safety evaluation. In the area of safety, fundamental questions relating to driver performance, accident data and mature systems are addressed. |
