This research was directed at optimizing the auditory warnings that may be used in future crash avoidance warning applications. There is a need to standardize such warnings, so that they retain immediacy of meaning across various vehicles, situations, and hazards. The current findings contribute to an empirical basis upon which such decisions can be made, so that an effective warning stimulus is ensured. The research included the following sequence of steps: it identified key attributes of auditory warning signals; established relative importance weightings for each of those attributes through expert ratings; collected subjective ratings for each attribute for a set of potential crash avoidance warning sounds through a laboratory experiment; applied the weightings to the subjective ratings to evaluate each sound; and identified a most promising subset of sounds, based on the findings. The experimental study was successful in identifying four acoustic signals as preferred over 22 others for in-vehicle application. Findings for voice message warnings were less clear, since no voice message stood out as clearly better. |
