摘要: The role of wireless communications in transportation is becoming increasingly important. Wireless communications are critical for many applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automated Collision Notification (ACN). Although many facets of Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) operations are affected by the availability of wireless communications, including cellular phones, appropriate coverage information is not readily available. For KDOT to make good decisions, more detailed cellular data is needed. To address this issue, the University of Kansas was asked to develop a map of the cellular coverage for the Kansas State Highway System. Coverage data was collected for both A-side and B-side cellular frequencies. Recognizing that different applications use wireless communications in different ways, a new process and measure were developed to help analyze cellular coverage with respect to mobile applications. This report details the data collection process and the post processing performed. A measure of the continuity of coverage for mobile applications, Maximum Sustainable Call Length (MSCL), is introduced and defined, then applied to the coverage data. Results are summarized by district for both A-side and B-side frequencies, as well as for combined coverage. Recommendations are provided based on the results of this study.
