On July 21, 2000, the FCC assigned 511 as the nationwide telephone number for traveler information. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has since taken a lead role in making 511 a reality by leading the "511 Deployment Coalition" comprised of numerous other associations and public and private-sector members. ICDN Editor Jerry Werner recently discussed the status of this effort with Jim Wright from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), who was chosen to direct this new Coalition at a recent meeting of AASHTO's Advanced Transportation Systems (ATS) Subcommittee in Norfolk, VA. |
