摘要: Real-time adaptive signal control has the potential to increase the operational efficiency and safety of existing roadways. Unfortunately, traffic control equipment that has been used in the past is neither capable of generating adequate traffic descriptive information nor communicating effectively as a system. Technological advances in video imaging and open architecture signal controllers have the potential of overcoming these limitations and creating the necessary infrastructure for real-time control. An example of real-time control of signals and lane use is the Smart diamond, a development project underway at the Texas A&M ITS Research Center of Excellence.
