摘要: After a vehicle is stopped, the next step in the process is the driver interview, typically conducted by the officer at the driver-side window of the vehicle. The purpose of this interview, in conjunction with other observations made by the officer, is to determine whether or not there is reasonable suspicion to proceed with an impaired driving investigation. If yes, the driver is typically asked to step out of the vehicle and submit to field sobriety testing. If no, no further impaired driving investigation would likely be conducted. The objective of this paper is to summarize available research on process and procedure as they relate to an impaired driving investigation at the driver-side window immediately following a vehicle stop. Throughout this paper, the term "DUI" encompasses operating under the influence; driving under the influence; operating while intoxicated; operating under the influence; operating at a blood alcohol concentration above 0.08 or 0.10 percent, and similar charges. It should be noted that this general use of the term "DUI" obscures important distinctions between each charge as defined uniquely in the laws of each state.
