Traffic signal management utilizes improved tools and equipment to make existing traffic signal control systems operate more efficiently. It improves air quality through lower fuel consumption, reduces congestion and serious accidents, and postpones the need for additional road capacity. The FHWA is campaigning to inform local and regional decision-makers about the eligibility of traffic signal management programs with existing federal funding. The article also discusses changes that have taken place in traffic signal technology and looks at the different types of controllers: pretimed and traffic-actuated, including semi-actuated, fully actuated, and volume-density. |
