The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) is the state's largest public works agency. It is responsible for providing Iowa residents with a safe and reliable transportation system and for protecting and enhancing the state's environmental resources. IDOT's public service ethic is guided by a philosophical approach that encourages employees to provide a good transportation system as well as a healthy environment. However, some state residents and employees, as well as external customers of IDOT, find this approach somewhat frustrating and confusing. This article looks at the environmentally-friendly policy of the IDOT, and reports on a survey conducted of state residents to acquire a better sense of the public's perception of IDOT's environmental approach. The information gained from this survey will provide essential benchline data from which IDOT can build a focused, multiyear educational and communication plan. |
