This article reviews the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) joint sponsorship of a first-of-its-kind executive seminar convened to explore the possibilities presented by asset management. Asset management is defined as a systematic process of maintaining, upgrading, and operating physical assets, such as roadways and bridges, in a cost-effective way. The article describes the events that led up to the decision to hold the symposium, what was learned as a result of this symposium, and why asset management promises to be such an important tool for transportation professionals who believe that the best way to make the best use of increasingly scarce resources is to learn to make smarter and better decisions about their physical assets. |
