On October 3, 1993, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) celebrated 100 years of service to the country. Today, the 68,800 km (42, 800 mi) Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways is the most visible result, but the peaceful campaign continues as the FHWA adapts to the intermodal demands of the 1990s. The article reviews the last 100 years, including the agency's origins, the birth and clarification of the Federal-aid Highway Program, launching the Interstate Highway Program, and the Post-Interstate Era. |
