This article describes the architecture of the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) umbrella program--the Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS)--which consists of various user services in the areas of travel and traffic management, public transportation management, electronic payment, commercial vehicle operations, emergency management, and advanced vehicle safety systems. Specifically, the architecture is the framework that allows the system to interact and work together to achieve overall goals and objectives. The IVHS architecture is modular in nature to permit the introduction of new components over time. The article reviews how a system architecture is developed and the methodology used to create the IVHS architecture. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a series of consensus-building regional forums to begin developing the IVHS architecture. Currently, four separate contractor teams are developing IVHS architecture, each deploying different strategies. Contractor teams will use feedback from the forums to revise the IVHS architecture alternatives. |
