Houston's sudden changes in weather, including massive downpours and occasional ice storms make it important to travelers to receive prompt, accurate information about weather conditions. The TxDOT has a system of 29 field sensors scattered throughout Houston that collect information on a variety of conditions, including depth of water on the roadway, the rate and accumulation of rainfall, air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction and pavement temperature and moisture. The information is relayed to the ALERT database at the Harris County Office of Emergency Management. Once an alarm threshold is met, the information is relayed to the public via an interactive Web site and message signs. Surveys showed that travelers used the information from the signs and used the Web as their secondary source of weather information. |
