The City of Corpus Christi, Texas, working with the Texas Transportation Institute, adapted a reverse-flow method developed in North Carolina to speed hurricane evacuations. Researchers analyzed the effects of numerous scenarios to ensure that traffic would flow freely at nearby intersections when entrance ramps became exit ramps and the reverse. The reversal must also be easily understood by drivers, and the physical changes, such as removal of median barriers must be able to be accomplished in a timely manner, given the typical window of warning that is 10 to 12 hours. |
