After conducting a study of the transportation needs of people living in colonias (rural settlements without water, sewers, and electricity), Texas A&M University Center for Housing and Urban Development (CHUD) and the Southwest University Transportation Center (SWUTC) developed a program by which colonia communities could obtain 15-person caminoeta vans for use as transportation between the their homes and community centers, grocery stores, drug stores, doctors, and other places. Funding for the initiative was provided by the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO), which approved the purchase of 31 vans. |
