In the marine industry, as many as 26 fires can be expected to occur every year on small passenger vessels, and the majority of those fires likely will occur on vessels that are underway. This article reports on these trends and many others identified in an analysis recently conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). The USCG Compliance Analysis Division examined fires on U.S. flagged, USCG-inspected passenger vessels less than 100 gross tons that are operated under regulations found in 46 CFR Subchapter T. The USCG examined data reported between Jan. 22, 1992 and Dec. 5, 2000 to determine if any trends exist in the fires on those vessels to prevent future fires and accidents from occurring. |
